The Terminal Phase of Illness

Withdrawal
As death approaches, the patient may talk less and become less involved in the activities around them, less willing to see visitors, even close friends or family members. This withdrawal does not signify depression or rejection of loved ones. This phase should not be seen as a negative statement about the caregivers or friends. Instead, it is a natural withdrawal of emotional, physical and spiritual energy from their lives and their surroundings. Again, preparing the family for this phase in the dying process will prevent misunderstandings and enable the caregivers to continue to support the dying patient.
